Chacco

Kharossan Rimini (a.k.a. Chacco)

Retired gelding, Year of birth: 1981

Born in Australia in 1981, Chacco competed in multiple 100-mile endurance races throughout his lifetime. He first came to the United States for the World Endurance Championship in 1996 near Manhattan, Kansas. However, due to lameness, Chacco never returned home to Australia and instead remained with a Kansas State University veterinarian until 1999, when he was acquired by his owner, Christine Abbott. Christine competed Chacco in competitive trail riding until he was diagnosed with guttural pouch cancer in 2002. He was retired to Rainbow Meadows in January 2006.

Black Velvet

Retired mare, year of birth: approx. 1985

Black Velvet was on the truck to slaughter when she was trampled by the others and could not get back to her feet. When the truck driver found her under the other horses, he decided to leave her at a nearby sale barn with the intentions of coming back later to take her on to the slaughter plant. Thanks to the many concerned donors and volunteers who provided dollars, time and transport, the Arabian mare came to Rainbow Meadows in December. She healed well from her scrapes and bruises, and is a true sweetheart who absolutely adores people.

Update:

Velvet has been "rescued" again and is now sponsored as a retired horse here at Rainbow Meadows.  Her sponsorship is the result of Team Velvet, a group of women from across the United States who have joined together to ensure that Velvet never has to face the horrors of abuse, neglect or slaughter again.  Team Velvet members met through an online discussion board called the Fans of Barbaro (FOB).  This group started after the Thoroughbred Barbaro sustained a horrific racing injury which eventually proved to be life-ending.  As this group grew, a strong interest in improving the circumstances for race horses, in opposing slaughter and in the support for rescues also grew.  The FOB raised the initial slaughter ransom which allowed Velvet to be purchased from the "kill buyer".  Their support, and the support of others, has provided Velvet with the utmost in health and wellness care.  And now, Team Velvet is providing for her future.  Thank You, Team Velvet!
