Lady Di was seized by authorities in Oklahoma from an owner who
could not see that he was starving this beautiful mare to
death. After two foals, Di was unable to sustain her body weight
with the stress of lactation. Her weight and energy diminished
quickly but no one stepped up to assist her. Fortunately a local
veterinarian refused to ignore her plight. The court found in behalf
of Lady Di and ordered her transferred to Rainbow Meadows.

PR: 5-6 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 3 ~ RE:
Intermediate
Third time is a charm for this lovely mare. Formerly known as Tess,
this beautiful grey girl was trapped in a Kansas rescue that was
closed in 2010 when all of the equines were seized due to severe
neglect concerns. Tess was among nearly 70 horses, donkeys and mules
that were placed into new homes by Coffey County authorities in
September 2010. Just over a year later her new owner decided she was
no longer desirable and Rainbow Meadows was alerted to her plight.
Now in her third home we decided that the name Trey (resembling the
Spanish word for “three”, “tres”) was more fitting for her.
Trey is broke to ride but will do best with an intermediate rider. She is a very proud and elegant mare
and moves with great power.
See her being ridden in this video.

DOB: June 10, 2008 ~ G:
Gelding ~ HT: 14h2" ~ WT: 900
PR: 2-3 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 2 (due to age) ~ RE: Advanced beginner
Registering organization: American
Quarter Horse Association (#5133496)
This sweet Palomino gelding
arrived at Rainbow Meadows after having been slowly starving to
death at a boarding facility in Wichita. Though space was tight,
Rainbow Meadows knew that it had to take him after learning that the
facility owner wanted to shoot him to eliminate the possibility of
animal control being involved. He arrived as a 1+ on the Body
Condition Scoring chart (BCS), was covered in bite marks and had not
had his hooves trimmed in months and months. He had rubbed over 1/3
of his mane off reaching through the fences, trying to get food. He
was immediately placed on unlimited hay and Thrive and quickly began
to blossom. He is ridable and will make a wonderful partner for a
loving person.

PR: 3 ~ ST: No ~ TL: n/a ~ RE: n/a
Registering organization: American Miniature Horse Registration (#267360T)
Mini Me
came to Rainbow Meadows as one of the "Lucky 19+4." The "Lucky 19+4"
included 19 horses, donkeys, miniature mules and miniature horses
(four of which were pregnant) that were seized on March 13, 2008
along with llamas, dogs, sheep, goats, cats, cattle, turkeys,
chickens and prairie dogs in one of Kansas's largest cases of animal
cruelty. Upon seizure, the horses and donkeys were placed at Rainbow
Meadows, where they received the necessary care to bring them back
to health. Mini Me was adopted in 2010 but unfortunately had to be
returned to the rescue. She is now looking for her forever home!

Isabelle (a.k.a. Izzy)
DOB: Approx. 1986 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 15h
~ WT: 1050
PR: 2 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 3 ~ RE: Novice to intermediate
Izzy is a rescued Thoroughbred mare who was
going to be euthanized by her previous owner because she was too
energetic for the family's children. She was only days from a date
with the needle when her previous owner sought another option,
contacting Rainbow Meadows. Izzy has proven to be quiet, easily
handled and sound, and was adopted in 2008. Unfortunately,
health problems forced her adopters to return her to Rainbow
Meadows, where she now awaits her forever home.

B II Gyza (a.k.a. Pepper)
DOB: 1989 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 13h3"
~ WT: 700
PR: 3 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 4 ~ RE: Novice
Registering organization: Arabian Horse Association
Registration number: 421142
B II Gyza (GYR
x Zora), aka Pepper, is a registered Arabian mare who had been used in a backyard breeding operation in north-central Kansas. When
the inability to care for the horses reached a crisis level, mares
and stallions were still allowed to run together, despite the lack
of food and wellness care. As a result, Pepper was bred at the age
of 20. The stress of malnutrition was great, especially when
complicated by the presence of a developing foal. Fortunately, her
daughter Contessa was born healthy and strong in late September
2009. Pepper was adopted in 2010, but had to be returned to the
rescue in the fall of 2011. She is now awaiting her forever home.

DOB: May 6, 1996 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 15h1 ~ WT: 1100
PR: 4-5 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 1-2 ~ RE: Intermediate
Registering organization: American Quarter Horse Association
(#3507507)
DNA tested 98.4% foundation bred
This
beautiful foundation bred quarter horse served as a broodmare for a
few years before she found herself in need of a new home. An
independent mare with an aloof air, Molly is hard to catch unless
she is allowed to approach on “her own terms”. That personality
quirk proved to be hard on her owners who decided that she needed
more than they could provide. Rainbow Meadows was asked to step in
an assist in finding her a forever home. Molly is broke to ride but
has not been under saddle but a couple of times over the past 6-7
years. She needs someone willing to refresh her skills and patiently
help her develop her willingness to be caught in the pasture.

Miss Pairadise (a.k.a. Cheyenne)

14h2.5 ~ WT: 900
PR: 3 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 1 (due to age) ~ RE: Intermediate (because she
is young)
Registering organization: American Quarter Horse Association
(#4947300)
Caught in a
"he said - she said" dilemma, Miss Pairadise (a.k.a. Cheyenne)
needed safe refuge from threats to do her harm. Her owner believed
he had made arrangement for her care. The caretaker believed that
she had been taken advantage of and that no financial support had
been provided for the care of the mare. Regardless of the "truth",
Cheyenne was at risk and Rainbow Meadows stepped up to save her from
possible abuse, or worse.
Sold as a
weanling from a Kansas breeding operation and sold again as a
4-year-old, Cheyenne has been lightly used in ranch work, having
been started shortly after turning 4-years-old in the summer of
2011. She needs continued education and experience but is a sweet
and friendly mare. She will be slow to physically mature, expected
to reach her prime in her fifth year.

Scout
DOB: Approx. 1997 ~ G: Gelding ~ HT: 15h1"
~ WT: 1100
PR: 5 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 3 ~ RE: Intermediate
Abandoned at a northeast
Kansas veterinarian’s office by his owners after a diagnosis of a
mild lameness, Scout was immediately admitted by Rainbow Meadows. It
was apparent upon arrival that Scout had not had proper foot care
for years. Routine hoof trims remedied nearly all of his discomfort, allowing him to function well as a pleasure horse. He
has proved to be gaited and served as a ranch horse
prior to being sold at auction in approximately 2008 in Oklahoma. He
was adopted in 2011, but
unfortunately, due to personal reasons, the adopters had to return
him to the rescue. He is now awaiting his forever home.

DOB: May 21, 1994 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 15h2" ~ WT: 1000
PR: 6 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 3-4 ~ RE: Advanced intermediate
Registering organization: Arabian Horse Association
(#IA314614)
A former show
horse from Nebraska, Krystal has had a number of owners in her
lifetime. Her most recent owner accepted responsibility for her care
after Krystal's previous owner found herself in financial duress and
unable to continue her care. When it became apparent that Krystal
was spending her time languishing in the pasture due to time
constraints, her new owner began looking for opportunities to rehome
her. However, finding a "perfect home" was the priority and the time
required to find that home was too high. A decision was made to
evaluate rescues, with a plan to surrender Krystal to the rescue,
allowing the rescue to rehome her. After review of numerous
facilities, Rainbow Meadows was selected to be her new guardians
until her "forever home" can be identified. Krystal can be nervous
under saddle but is well trained.

DOB: April 26, 2007 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 14h1" ~ WT: 850
PR: 2 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 1 ~ RE: Intermediate
Registering organization: American Quarter Horse Association

Seized in
July 2010 by the Coffey County Sheriff, Annie was among 80+
horses, donkeys and mules removed from a Waverly, KS residence. All
of the animals were malnourished - some severely emaciated due to
lack of adequate nutrition - and suffered from a number of maladies,
including parasitism, inadequate hoof care, rain rot, scratches and
other issues. Rainbow Meadows was involved in the coordination of a
placement process which found new, forever homes, for all of the
equines and accepted responsibility for four of the horses,
including Annie. Annie completed her rehabilitation and is ready to
find her new adopters.

Rose
DOB: Approx. 2003 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 14h1" ~ WT: 735 (upon
admission)
PR: 6 ~ ST: Unknown ~ TL: Unknown ~ RE: Unknown
Rose is a paint mare with one blue eye that
was abandoned in December 2009 at Watson Park in
Wichita, KS, along with two other youngsters. One of them was
nursing on her, making it a suspected offspring. She was then taken
to an auction where she was purchased along with the same young
horses. Minimal care was offered and one day Rose was
found to have a new baby at her side. Already very thin and nursing
a yearling, the new little bay colt had placed significant stress on
an already compromised body. Rainbow Meadows was contacted by a
concerned citizen and requested investigative assistance from a
volunteer who lived nearby. That volunteer agreed to pay a ransom
and provide transport for Rose and the colt, saving them from a life
of neglect and giving them a second chance. Rose is very friendly
and compliant and is awaiting her forever home.

DOB: Approx. 2006 ~ G: Gelding ~ HT: 14h3" ~ WT: 1000
PR: 2 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 1 ~ RE: Intermediate
A lovely Mustang cross,
Charmer came to Rainbow Meadows in an owner surrender case due to
the difficult economic conditions. His owner's husband had lost his
job earlier in the year and the family had to downsize in order to
make ends meet. When Rainbow Meadows first interacted with Charmer,
he was an intact stallion, but one of the quietest and gentlest boys
there is. He was gelded prior to coming to Rainbow Meadows where he
made the transition into our herd in June 2009.

Zatar
DOB: Approx. 2006 ~ G: Gelding ~ HT: 14h ~ WT: 850
PR: 7 ~ ST: No ~ TL: n/a ~ RE: Expert handler needed
Zatar arrived with three others - Saffron, Sage
and Cayenne (the "Spice Gang"). The owner had abandoned them on a
small 4-acre pasture in Chautauqua County, Kansas in March of
2009. The grass was quickly overgrazed but warm weather and frequent
rains prevented the horses from dying of starvation. With the
arrival of autumn, they began to lose weight rapidly. Fortunately, a
concerned citizen contacted authorities, who were able to locate the
absentee owner and secure the horses through a relinquishment
agreement. Rainbow Meadows was asked to step in and admit the horses
allowing us to start their rehabilitation immediately. Zatar is
cautious and mildly reactive with new experiences.

DOB: June 2009 ~ G: Gelding ~ HT: n/a ~ WT: n/a
PR: 2 ~ ST: n/a ~ TL: n/a ~ RE: n/a
This lionhearted colt was
born in June 2009, only to be orphaned following the death of his
dam as a result of starvation. With no milk from his mother and
severe neglect by his owners, Win's health steadily became worse and
worse. Numerous pleas were made to local authorities, but to no
avail. Finally, after 3 months of fruitless attempts to save him, a
guardian angel offered the owners a generous payment in exchange for
Win's life, securing his safety. Upon arrival at Rainbow Meadows, he
was very small for his age and in a state of severe emaciation and
poor health. He was immediately started on a refeeding program, and
soon began regaining the coltish energy he had been lacking. He
continues to grow each and every day as he runs Rainbow Meadows'

This mare was purchased by
a kill buyer at an Emporia, KS production sale in September 2009
when the breeders decided to reduce their broodmare herd. When it
was learned that she was slated for slaughter, a number of
organizations came together to purchase her from the killer and
rescue her from the terror of transport and the agony of the kill
box. Though only 15 years old, Lark already has 12 registered foals
on the ground. Lark was confirmed to be in foal to AQHA registered
Buckskin stallion Able To Cheet and delivered Abbi on April 6, 2010.
Abbi is her 13th
baby. Lark is not expected to have been under saddle in the past and
has had minimal handling. She is a substantial mare with
great presence. Lark will require an experienced handler to take her
from broodmare to the trail.

Peter Pan came to Rainbow
Meadows as one of "9 Lives." Seized in a rural Kansas
cruelty case in March of 2009, 8 horses (one pregnant) were
found neglected and at great risk. Severely emaciated, heavily
parasitized, lice infested, and virtually untouched, the "9 Lives" were
found in a 5-acre lot which resembled a public landfill. There were
carcasses of dead animals littering the property. There was no food
to eat and the only water available was from a contaminated pond. However, their futures are bright
as they were rescued by Rainbow Meadows where they were
rehabilitated and taught to trust the humans in their life. Peter
Pan is a pony mule that will make a great child's mount once

was initially rescued by a caring individual in 2006 from a
neglectful situation involving 12 other horses and nearly 100 goats.
She was later sold, and sadly found herself again in harm’s way as
she was essentially abandoned by her new owner. After time spent
with volunteers and care at Rainbow Meadows, Gigi is now at a
healthy weight and has gained much trust in human companionship. She
is waiting for a forever home and the love of an adopter.

Moose
joined Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement, Inc. on
December 31, 2005, the victim of a stroke that significantly
affected his ability to control the left side of his body. Following
his stroke, Moose’s owners refused to provide for him the care and
attention he needed. Fortunately, a sympathetic veterinarian stepped
in, rehabilitated him and later brought him to us. Since his
arrival, Moose has regained some sight in his left eye, can now hear
in his left ear and occasionally canters around the pasture. Moose
is a gentle giant. |
