Cinnamon
DOB: Approx. 2003 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 10h ~ WT: 400
PR: 2 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 2 ~ RE: Novice
Cinnamon is a grandmother's
dream: She is small, quiet, loves attention and is saddle trained
for even the most timid beginner. She can show a bit of "pony"
behavior but she is a doll. Cinnamon reportedly foundered in 2008 as
a result of morbid obesity. Her hoof care became too costly and the
maintenance was discontinued. As a result, she was in chronic pain
with hoof walls overgrown by 2-4 inches. Because they were not able
to meet her needs in hoof care, the owners decided to sign her over
to Rainbow Meadows, where she immediately began a weight reduction
program and intensive hoof care regimen. She showed significant
progress upon arrival and continues to get better every day!

Scout
DOB: Approx. 1997 ~ G: Gelding ~ HT: 15h2-3" ~ WT: 1100
PR: 5 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 3, Pleasure ~ RE: Novice-Intermediate
Abandoned at a northeast
Kansas veterinarian’s office by his owners after a diagnosis of a
mild lameness, Scout was immediately admitted by Rainbow Meadows. It
was apparent upon arrival that Scout had not had proper foot care
for years and his heels were significantly overgrown, resulting in
the associated lameness. Routine hoof trims are expected to remedy
most of his discomfort, allowing him to function well as a pleasure horse,
though he cannot be expected to become a performance horse. Scout
is a big boy, standing over 15h 2" tall. He served as a ranch horse
prior to being sold at auction in approximately 2008 in Oklahoma. He
is quiet and trusting but does display evidence of previous harsh
treatment to his ears and lips (probable twitching).

ACE
DOB: Approx. 2002 ~ G: Gelding ~ HT: 14h2" ~ WT: 900
PR: 4 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 4, Trail/Cattle ~ RE: Intermediate-Expert
A significant back injury
that resulted in surgery created a situation in which ACE's previous
owner realized that she would not be able to ride a trotting horse
in the future. As a consequence, she knew she needed to find ACE a
good home even after some wonderful times with this boy. She turned
to Rainbow Meadows to care for him and find him a forever home. This
beautiful Arabian gelding has worked cattle, explored various trails
and competed in competitive trail events. He is about 14h 2" tall
with a very solid build. ACE is very inquisitive and friendly,
loving human attention.

DOB: April 22, 1999 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 14h3.5" ~ WT: 1000
PR: 4 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 2, Pleasure/trail ~ RE: Novice
Registering organization: American Paint Horse Association
Registration number: 534,400
Another story of economic
hardship, Sugar and her daughter Memphis could no longer be cared
for by their owner and a plea for assistance was received by Rainbow
Meadows to take pair. Sugar is a stunning mare. She is very kind and
cooperative with a soft eye. She has not been ridden since 2009 but
should return to work under saddle easily.

Rose & Mickie
ROSE - DOB: Approx. 2003 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 14h1" ~ WT: 735 (upon
admission)
PR: 6 ~ ST: Unknown ~ TL: Unknown ~ RE: Unknown
MICKIE - DOB: May 20, 2010 ~ G: Stallion ~ HT: n/a ~ WT: n/a
PR: 4 ~ ST: n/a ~ TL: n/a ~ RE: n/a
Rose is a paint mare with
one blue eye that supposedly had been abandoned in December 2009 at
Watson Park in Wichita, KS, along with two other youngsters. One of
them was nursing on her, making it a suspected offspring. She was
then taken to a "less-than-desirable" facility for holding until she
was offered for sale at an auction in Wellington, KS. There, the
same holding facility bid on her, and ended up bringing those same
three horses back home with them.
Minimal care was offered
and one day Rose was found to have a new baby at her side. Already
very thin and nursing a yearling, the new little bay colt – Mickie –
had placed significant stress on an already compromised body.
Rainbow Meadows was
contacted by a concerned citizen and requested investigative
assistance from a volunteer who lived nearby. That volunteer agreed
to pay a ransom and provide transport for Rose and Mickie, saving
them from a life of neglect and giving them a second chance.
Rose is very friendly and
compliant. Mickie had never been handled until he was loaded into
the trailer headed for Rainbow Meadows. They both will receive basic
handling and desensitization while recovering at Rainbow Meadows and
awaiting their new forever home.

Charmer
DOB: Approx. 2006 ~ G: Gelding ~ HT: 14h3" ~ WT: 1000
PR: 3 ~ ST: No ~ TL: n/a ~ RE: n/a
A lovely Mustang cross
Charmer came to Rainbow Meadows in an owner surrender case due to
the difficult economic conditions. His owner's husband had lost his
job earlier in the year and the family had to downsize in order to
make ends meet. When Rainbow Meadows first interacted with Charmer,
he was an intact stallion, but one of the quietest and gentlest boys
there is. He was gelded prior to coming to Rainbow Meadows where he
made the transition into our herd in June 2009.

Trixie
DOB: Approx. 1991 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 14h1" ~ WT: 950
PR: 5 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 3 ~ RE: Intermediate
Captured by the
BLM in 1992 in New Mexico, this mare was transported to Oklahoma for
adoption where she was adopted by a rancher from southeast Kansas. Trixie
was used as a ranch horse until 2006. She was bred in 2004 and
produced a 1/2 Mustang 1/2 APHA colt, Joker. Trixie and Joker were
no longer wanted and were relinquished to Rainbow Meadows. Trixie is
very wary of strangers and will require a patient handler who
understands the unique nature of the Mustang.

Dolly, upon arrival

May 2010 |
Dolly
DOB: Approx. 1990 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 14h1" ~ WT: 850
PR: 3 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 4 ~ RE: Intermediate
Dolly came to Rainbow
Meadows in the most dire condition of any horse to arrive here.
Saved by two wonderful volunteers, who trailered her in from
Missouri, Dolly had almost nothing left in her. So thin and so weak,
she couldn’t even stand for the three-hour trailer ride to the
rescue. For the first days, she spent much of her time lying down,
and could only rise when given the assistance of being hoisted up
with a tractor. But by less than two weeks later, she was already
trotting, gaining weight and healing from her wounds caused by her
struggling as she laid in the trailer for transport. Her recovery
will be a long one, but she has already proven that she has a true
zest for life and Rainbow Meadows is doing everything it can to give
her the chance she deserves! |

Saffron
DOB: Approx. 2004 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 14h1" ~ WT: 950
PR: 4 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 2 ~ RE: Novice-Intermediate
Saffron arrived with three
others - Sage, Zatar and Cayenne (the "Spice Gang"). The owner had
abandoned them on a small 4-acre pasture in Chautauqua County,
Kansas in March of 2009. The grass was quickly overgrazed but warm
weather and frequent rains prevented the horses from dying of
starvation. With the arrival of autumn, they began to lose weight
rapidly. Fortunately, a concerned citizen contacted authorities, who
were able to locate the absentee owner and secure the horses through
a relinquishment agreement. Rainbow Meadows was asked to step in and
admit the horses allowing us to start their rehabilitation
immediately. Saffron is a gaited mare who stands at 14h tall and is
reported to be saddle trained.

Winrischa (a.k.a. Win) meaning "Tall Oak"
DOB: June 2009 ~ G: Gelding ~ HT: n/a ~ WT: n/a
PR: 2 ~ ST: n/a ~ TL: n/a ~ RE: n/a
This lionhearted colt was
born in June 2009, only to be orphaned following the death of his
dam as a result of starvation. With no milk from his mother and
severe neglect by his owners, Win's health steadily became worse and
worse. Numerous pleas were made to local authorities, but to no
avail. Finally, after 3 months of fruitless attempts to save him, a
guardian angel offered the owners a generous payment in exchange for
Win's life, securing his safety. Upon arrival at Rainbow Meadows, he
was very small for his age and in a state of severe emaciation and
poor health. He was immediately started on a refeeding program, and
soon began regaining the coltish energy he had been lacking. He
continues to grow each and every day as he runs Rainbow Meadows'
pastures.

Little Barlite (a.k.a. Lark)
DOB: 1994 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 15h3" ~ WT: 1100
PR: 7 ~ ST: No ~ TL: n/a ~ RE: n/a
Registering organization: American Quarter Horse Association
Registration number: 3255692
This mare was purchased by
a kill buyer at an Emporia, KS production sale in September 2009
when the breeders decided to reduce their broodmare herd. When it
was learned that she was slated for slaughter, a number of
organizations came together to purchase her from the killer and
rescue her from the terror of transport and the agony of the kill
box. Though only 15 years old, Lark already has 12 registered foals
on the ground. Lark was confirmed to be in foal to AQHA registered
Buckskin stallion Able To Cheet and delivered Abbi on April 6, 2010.
Abbi is her 13th
baby
(Click here to watch Abbi grow!). Lark is not expected to have been under saddle in the past and
has had minimal handling. Until Abbi's weaning, she will not be asked to learn any new skills
beyond necessary ground manners. She is a substantial mare with
great presence. Lark will require an experienced handler to take her
from broodmare to the trail.

Lil' Bit
DOB: Approx. 1986 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 13h2" ~ WT: 750
PR: 5 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 3 ~ RE: Novice-Intermediate
Lil’ Bit was abandoned at
an auction in Wichita, Kansas - so thin that no one would even pay
the minimum bid of $5.00 for this poor Pony of America mare. At over
20 years of age, blind in one eye and nearly blind in the other, she
was covered in lice and filth when she arrived at Rainbow
Meadows. She weighed in at less than 450 pounds and in truly
pathetic condition. However, after a cleansing bath to kill the lice
and another to treat all the skin lesions caused by them, a badly
needed hoof trim, applications of various medications, and two good
meals, she was already doing better by the end of the day. Rainbow
Meadows worked daily to bring her back to good health, and she is
now looking for her forever home, where she would make a wonderful
companion horse or pet.

PR: 9 ~ ST: No ~ TL: n/a ~ RE: Expert handler needed
Juliette came to Rainbow
Meadows as one of "9 Lives." Seized in a rural Kansas
cruelty case in March of 2009, 8 horses (one pregnant) were
found neglected and at great risk. Severely emaciated, heavily
parasitized, lice infested, and virtually untouched, the "9 Lives" were
found in a 5-acre lot which resembled a public landfill. There were
carcasses of dead animals littering the property. There was no food
to eat and the only water available was from a contaminated pond. However, their futures are bright
as they were rescued by Rainbow Meadows where they were
rehabilitated and taught to trust the humans in their life. Juliette
is of the unique Curly breed.

Gigi
DOB: Approx. 1999 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 14h3" ~ WT: 850
PR: 9 ~ ST: No ~ TL: n/a ~ RE: Expert handler needed
GiGi is a very pretty
little Saddlebred mare who was nearly 150 pounds underweight upon
her arrival and was quite frightened and suspicious of humans. She
was initially rescued by a caring individual in 2006 from a
neglectful situation involving 12 other horses and nearly 100 goats.
She was later sold, and sadly found herself again in harm’s way as
she was essentially abandoned by her new owner. After time spent
with volunteers and care at Rainbow Meadows, Gigi is now at a
healthy weight and has gained much trust in human companionship. She
is waiting for a forever home and the love of an adopter.

Thunder
DOB: Approx. 2003 ~ G: Gelding ~ HT: 14h1" ~
WT: 950
PR: 5 ~ ST: Yes ~ TL: 1 ~ RE: Intermediate
Thunder was owned by a young mother of two who
found after a divorce that she could no longer care for her three
horses. Desperate for assistance, she contacted Rainbow Meadows. The
eldest of the group, a BLM Mustang mare and mother to the two
younger horses (Thunder and Stormy), was placed immediately. Rainbow
Meadows is currently seeking a home for Thunder, a young gelding who
is ripe for his initial saddle training. Thunder is incredibly
friendly and nearly unflapplable, while being very curious. He is
only 14 h tall and slight of build, so would serve a smaller adult
or child very well. He is currently being fostered in the Wichita

Daisy is a
beautiful tri-colored pony cross (possibly a pony/Mustang). She was
purchased in 2006 from a neglectful situation, thin and lacking
energy. After loving care and attention, she regained her “fire” and
proved to be a very dominant mare. Her novice owners loved her
dearly but decided that she was too much for them to handle safely.
She has been at Rainbow Meadows for retraining and handling and
currently awaits her forever home.

DOB: Approx. 1983 ~ G: Mare ~
HT: 14h ~ WT: 850

Registering organization: Arabian Horse
Association
Nia
joined Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement, Inc. in 2005. A
victim of moon blindness and a registered Egyptian Arabian, Nia
spent many years as a brood mare. While it is believed she has been
blind for quite some time, when she was eventually no longer able to
produce foals, her owner requested that she be put down.
Fortunately, the veterinarian saw the light in Nia’s eyes. Nia is a
calm and quiet mare who is a joy to be around. Rainbow Meadows
Equine Rescue and Retirement, Inc. is currently exploring
opportunities for her to serve as a companion animal and visit
nursing homes.

Rescue and Retirement, Inc. While she is a rather sensitive animal,
Palomita can still be ridden and offers her rider a smooth Paso Fino

Rescued from Alberta, Canada in 2004, Lexi spent many years on the
Premarin lines where she was used in the production of the hormone,
estrogen. This process required that she be kept 24 hours a day in a
three-foot tie stall for seven months out of each year. When she
arrived, Lexi was extremely thin, frightened and pregnant. Through
the years, she has gained greater trust in humans and lives out her
days at Rainbow Meadows. Her foal,
Indigo Rain (a.k.a. Indi) is now a healthy and curious young mare in

Moose
joined Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement, Inc. on
December 31, 2005, the victim of a stroke that significantly
affected his ability to control the left side of his body. Following
his stroke, Moose’s owners refused to provide for him the care and
attention he needed. Fortunately, a sympathetic veterinarian stepped
in, rehabilitated him and later brought him to us. Since his
arrival, Moose has regained some sight in his left eye, can now hear
in his left ear and occasionally canters around the pasture. Moose
is a gentle giant. |
