Midget
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 2004
As a
yearling pony, Midget came to Rainbow Meadows in December 2005.
Born with limited vision, Midget was taken to a killer sale in
November of 2005. There she was spotted by a loving and concerned
family who rescued her from certain death. When her owners
discovered that she was partially blind, they chose to give her to
Rainbow Meadows. Midget does not
realize she is visually impaired and rules the roost with the
confidence of a horse ten times her size.
Palomita
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1989
Palomita suffers from moon blindness.
For nearly all of her life, she
served as a registered Paso Fino brood mare. But when she was
no longer sound to produce foals, Palomita’s owners arranged for her
to be euthanized. Instead, she was welcomed to Rainbow Meadows. While she is a rather sensitive animal, Palomita can still be ridden and offers her rider a smooth Paso Fino
gait. Palomita joins Midget in their new forever home. |

Rio
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Approx. 2003
Seized in
July 2010 by the Coffey County Sheriff, Rio was among 80+
horses, donkeys and mules removed from a Waverly, KS residence. All

lack of adequate nutrition - and suffered from a number of maladies,
including parasitism, inadequate hoof care, rain rot, scratches and
other issues. Rainbow Meadows was involved in the coordination of a
placement process which found new, forever homes, for all of the
equines and accepted responsibility for four of the horses,
including Rio.
Rio has now gone on to his forever home. |

Strawberry
Rescued mare, Year of birth: 2001

Rainbow Meadows in 2008 as one of the "Lucky 19+4." The "Lucky 19+4"
included 19 horses, donkeys, miniature mules and miniature horses
(four of which were pregnant) that were seized
along with llamas, dogs, sheep, goats, cats, cattle, turkeys,
chickens and prairie dogs in one of Kansas's largest cases of animal
cruelty. Strawberry was adopted with her colt, Freedom, in February
2009. However, in May 2011, the adopters chose to return the ponies
to Rainbow Meadows due to personal reasons. During her adoption
Strawberry was used as a riding pony for their young grandson, and
will make a great partner to her new adoptive family!
Freedom
Rescued gelding, Date of birth: June 5, 2008
Freedom was born at Rainbow Meadows to Strawberry in 2008, one of
the "Lucky 19+4." Freedom was adopted with Strawberry in

gentle boy that he is. He will be a wonderful addition to
his new adoptive home. |

A Lexus (a.k.a. Lexi)
Rescued mare, Year of birth:
Approx. 1985
Rescued from Alberta, Canada in 2004, Lexi spent many years on the
Premarin lines where she was used in the production of the hormone,
estrogen. This process required that she be kept 24 hours a day in a
three-foot tie stall for seven months out of each year. When she
arrived, Lexi was extremely thin, frightened and pregnant. Through
the years, she has gained greater trust in humans and lived out her
days at Rainbow Meadows. Her foal,
Indigo Rain (a.k.a. Indi), is now a healthy and curious mare in
the ranch’s herd. Lexi will go on to serve as a companion horse in
her new forever home. |

Daisy
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 2002
Daisy is a
beautiful tri-colored pony cross (possibly a pony/Mustang). She was
purchased in 2006 from a neglectful situation, thin and lacking
energy. After loving care and attention, she regained her “fire” and
proved to be a very dominant mare. Her novice owners loved her
dearly but decided that she was too much for them to handle safely.
She was at Rainbow Meadows for retraining and handling and has now
found her forever home.

 |
Ladybug
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1991
Ladybug has
"been there, done that." Carrying her owner and then his
granddaughter to multiple awards in roping and 4-H speed events,
this spunky little mare proved herself to have a heart of
gold. Blinded in one eye in 2007, she continued to carry her riders
to successful results until semi-retired in 2009. More recently,
around 2010, Ladybug lost sight in her second eye. However, her
energy and zest for life remained, and she was adopted by a
wonderful couple to serve as a companion horse at her new forever
home. |
|
|
|
 |
Lois
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1988
Seized in
July 2010 by the Coffey County Sheriff, Lois was among 80+
horses, donkeys and mules removed from a Waverly, KS residence where
they had been severely neglected. Rainbow Meadows brought Lois for
rehabilitation and was later adopted. Unfortunately, due to personal
reasons, the adopters had to return Lois to the rescue. She has now
found a new forever home. Clyde
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Approx. 1991
Saved from a trip to the local
sale barn in central Kansas, Clyde has been the resident 'guest
horse' for the ranch owner who rescued him from a probable trip to
Mexico. He spent the majority of his previous years as a working
ranch horse and deserves some easy years as a recreational trail
horse. His owner asked that Rainbow Meadows become Clyde's advocate
and find him a new home, which he now has! |
|
|
|
 |
Saffron
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 2004
Saffron arrived with three
others - Sage, Zatar and Cayenne (the "Spice Gang"). The owner had
abandoned them on a small 4-acre pasture in Chautauqua County,
Kansas in March of 2009. The grass was quickly overgrazed but warm
weather and frequent rains prevented the horses from dying of
starvation. With the arrival of autumn, they began to lose weight
rapidly. Fortunately, a concerned citizen contacted authorities, who
were able to locate the absentee owner and secure the horses through
a relinquishment agreement. Rainbow Meadows was asked to step in and
admit the horses allowing us to start their rehabilitation
immediately. Saffron is a gaited mare who stands at 14h tall and
will be a great riding partner to her new adopter. |

 |
ACE
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Approx. 2002
A significant back injury
that resulted in surgery created a situation in which ACE's previous
owner realized that she would not be able to ride a trotting horse
in the future. As a consequence, she knew she needed to find ACE a
good home even after some wonderful times with this boy. She turned
to Rainbow Meadows to care for him and find him a forever home. This
beautiful Arabian gelding has worked cattle, explored various trails
and competed in competitive trail events. ACE is of a very solid build
and inquisitive and friendly,
loving human attention. He will be a great addition to his new home. |
|
|
|
 |
Faith
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1990
Faith was
part of the large herd of horses seized from a KS rescue in July
2010. At the time of seizure she was severely malnourished and
weak. Unfortunately, she was returned to the rescue operator as a
part of a plea bargain by the courts. A few months later Faith
needed a new home and Rainbow Meadows stepped up to offer this sweet
mare a safe place to land. She is reported to have been a cross
country eventer and has now gone on to her new forever home. |

KoKo
Rescued mare, Year of birth: 2006
Saved from slaughter as a weanling in 2006 when left by her breeder
at a Kansas auction near Topeka, Kansas, KoKo came to Rainbow
Meadows in December of that year. She grew and flourished here at
the ranch until adopted as a two-year-old. While with her adoptive
family, KoKo received her saddle training and was often ridden by
children. Unfortunately, a job loss resulted in the family having to
return KoKo to Rainbow Meadows. This beautiful gray filly is calm
and easy to handle, and will be a wonderful addition to her new
forever home! |

John
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Approx. 2007
John's life has been incredibly
tumultuous. First
purchased at a slaughter auction in Iowa in 2008 as a weanling, John
was transported to Kansas along with a number of other horses to a
rescue that was eventually closed by authorities in 2010. John then
found a new home during a placement process, but when John recovered
from his malnutrition his energy was more than his novice handlers
had expected. They contacted Rainbow Meadows for
assistance in finding John a new home. Since John had missed many of
his 'baby lessons' it was decided he would come to the rescue to
establish a good framework of education prior to being re-homed. He
is coming along well. He
is a sweet kid in a huge body that has found his forever home.
Big Boy
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Approx. 2000
Big Boy's owner found herself faced with
a difficult life situation requiring that she move from her suburban
ranchette in Oklahoma into a metropolitan area. That move meant that
she had to give up her beloved animals, including Big Boy. She
attempted to sell him but never felt good about those who contacted
her about purchase. Rather than selling him to an unknown, Big Boy's
owner decided that in his best interest he would be signed over to
Rainbow Meadows where his "forever home" could be identified. Lucky
for Big Boy, it now has! |

|
 |
Tucker
Rescued gelding,
Year of birth: Approx. 1995
Tucker was purchased in
2007 as a trail horse for an older woman. He has a congenital defect
of a "short epiglottis" which prohibits him from working at an
intense rate making him perfect as a trail horse; never eager to go
too fast. Together they rode miles and miles. A back injury
interfered in their future plans together when his owner could no
longer ride his "perfect" trot and had to move to a gaited
horse. When the decision became apparent that Tucker needed a new
family, where he could be loved and also be of service, his owner
contacted Rainbow Meadows knowing we would find him a safe place to
spend the remainder of his life.
Mickie
Rescued gelding,
Date of birth: May 20, 2010
Mickie’s mother, Rose, was
abandoned in December 2009 at Watson Park in Wichita, KS, along with
two other youngsters. She was taken to a an auction where she was
sold with the accompanying young horses. Minimal care was offered and one day Rose was found to have a new
baby at her side - Mickie. Already very thin and nursing a yearling,
the new little bay colt had placed significant stress on an already
compromised body. Rainbow Meadows was contacted by a concerned
citizen and requested investigative assistance from a volunteer who
lived nearby. That volunteer agreed to pay a ransom and provide
transport for Rose and Mickie, saving them from a life of neglect
and giving them a second chance. Mickie is a friendly, inquisitive
boy who has found his forever home. |

RMR Able to Hope (a.k.a. Abbi)
Rescued Quarter Horse mare,
Date of birth: April 6, 2010
Registering organization: American Quarter Horse Association
(#5283722)
Abbi's dam, Little Barlite (a.k.a. Lark), was a
throw-away-mare, largely unloved and ignored her entire life - good only
for making babies. Lark's retirement consisted of a final breeding and
then her lead rope was handed to a kill buyer in late August of
2009. But luckily for Lark, she was liberated from
the killer through the efforts of a number of organizations that pulled
together the resources and people needed to save her. Lark came to
Rainbow Meadows where she completed her final pregnancy: Abbi was born
on April 6, 2010. Her sire is Able to Cheet and she is AQHA registered.
Abbi has proven to be a headstrong and smart filly, and is the
largest youngster ever to grace the pastures of Rainbow Meadows.
She is very well developed for her age, and promises to be large,
much like her mama. She has now found her forever home where she can
continue to grow up. |

Juliette
Rescued Curly mare, Year of birth: Approx. 2005
Juliette came to Rainbow
Meadows as one of "9 Lives." Seized in a rural Kansas
cruelty case in March of 2009, 8 horses (one pregnant) were
found neglected and at great risk. Severely emaciated, heavily
parasitized, lice infested, and virtually untouched, the "9 Lives" were
found in a 5-acre lot which resembled a public landfill. There were
carcasses of dead animals littering the property. There was no food
to eat and the only water available was from a contaminated pond. However, their futures
were bright
when they were rescued by Rainbow Meadows where they were
rehabilitated and taught to trust the humans in their life. Juliette
is of the unique Curly breed, and has gone on to her new partners in
a wonderful forever home.

Dolly
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1990
Dolly came to Rainbow
Meadows in the most dire condition of any horse to arrive here.
Saved by two wonderful volunteers, who trailered her in from
Missouri, Dolly had almost nothing left in her. So thin and so weak,
she couldn’t even stand for the three-hour trailer ride to the
rescue. For the first days, she spent much of her time lying down,
and could only rise when given the assistance of being hoisted up
with a tractor. But by less than two weeks later, she was already
trotting, gaining weight and healing from her wounds caused by her
struggling as she laid in the trailer for transport. Her recovery
was a long one, but she proved that she has a true
zest for life and now has gone on to her forever home! |

Meadows in December of that year. She grew and flourished here at
the ranch until adopted as a two-year-old. While with her adoptive
family, Keoni received her saddle training and was often ridden by

calm and easy to handle and will be a great partner to her new
adopter! |

Fancy
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1994
Standing at 16h2”, Fancy is a calm, warmblood mare. While much of
her back story is uncertain, one thing is not – that she is an
experienced dressage mare with a lot of time in the ring. Rated in
early 2011 as a solid Level 2 by an expert dressage competitor, even
after more than two years of not having been ridden and being both
out-of-shape and underweight, Fancy proved that she had not
forgotten her job.
Fancy
came to Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement, Inc. after the
rescue facility she had previously been under the care of was shut
down by authorities as a result of reports of animal neglect and
cruelty. Fancy is a calm, friendly mare who enjoys attention. She is
blind in one eye but shows absolutely no evidence of anxiety
associated with her blindness and still performs excellently. She
has gone on to be a wonderful riding partner for her new adopters! |

Summer
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1991
Summer came to us in August
2010. She had been rescued from a rural Kansas location by a
concerned citizen involved in cat rescue and later transferred to
Rainbow Meadows. Summer had been neglected by her previous owners
and arrived severely emaciated, although in otherwise good health.
She is a loving, gentle mare who thrives on human companionship and
attention. She has proven to be gaited, and is probably a Missouri
Foxtrotter. She will make a wonderful addition to her new forever
home. |

Liz
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1987
Seized in September 2010 by the Coffey County Sheriff, Liz was among
80+ horses, donkeys and mules removed from a Waverly, KS residence.
All of the animals were malnourished - some severely emaciated due
to lack of adequate nutrition - and suffered from a number of
maladies, including parasitism, inadequate hoof care, rain rot,
scratches and other issues. Rainbow Meadows was involved in the
coordination of a placement process which found new, forever homes
for all of the equines and accepted responsibility for four of the
horses, including Liz. She is blind in one eye, but does not
demonstrate any concern with the blindness. Liz completed her
rehabilitation and has now found her forever home. |

Scout
Rescued gelding, Year of birth:
Approx. 1997
Abandoned at a northeast
Kansas veterinarian’s office by his owners after a diagnosis of a
mild lameness, Scout was immediately admitted by Rainbow Meadows. It
was apparent upon arrival that Scout had not had proper foot care
for years and his heels were significantly overgrown, resulting in
the associated lameness. Routine hoof trims have remedied most of his discomfort, allowing him to function well as a pleasure horse,
though he cannot be expected to become a performance horse. Scout
is a big boy, standing over 15h 2" tall. He served as a ranch horse
prior to being sold at auction in approximately 2008 in Oklahoma. He
is somewhat nervous but is a reliable performer. He has
proven to be gaited, and is likely a Missouri Foxtrotter. He has now
his forever home with fellow rescue, Lois. |

Heather
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 2007
Heather was
slowly starving to death while in a foster facility for a poorly
managed Kansas equine rescue. The rescue did not check on her
welfare and when the foster repeatedly asked for veterinary
intervention or to allow Heather to be adopted so that the foster
had the legal right to seek care, both were denied. Finally the
foster was fed up and returned Heather to the rescue just 5 days
before the rescue was closed by the local authorities. All of
the equines were seized.
Heather's
plight did not go unnoticed. Heather's bail from a kill buyer had
been previously paid in by a concerned woman from California. When
notified of the closing of the rescue which had purchased Heather,
the woman became concerned and contacted Rainbow Meadows. It was
confirmed that Heather was among the seized animals and in desperate
condition. The woman arranged with the local authorities to receive
placement of Heather and then Heather was transferred to Rainbow
Meadows for recovery.
Heather was a 1
on the body condition scoring system and near death. She did not
recover when given access to native grasses and after 30 days was
taken in by Rainbow Meadows for intensive refeeding. Heather
immediately responded to Thrive (www.thrivefeed.com)
and was nearly at ideal weight in 30 days. All of her costs of care
were covered by the California angel. |

Thunder
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: 2003
Thunder was owned by a young mother of two who
found after a divorce that she could no longer care for her three
horses. Desperate for assistance, she contacted Rainbow Meadows. The
eldest of the group, a BLM Mustang mare and mother to the two
younger horses (Thunder and Stormy), was placed immediately. A young
gelding who was ripe for his initial saddle training, he was fostered for
more than a year by a teenage boy and his family, during which they
spent countless hours working with him in both ground and saddle
training. They then made the decision to adopt him, giving Thunder
his forever home! |

Sierra
Rescued mare, Year of birth: 1995
Sierra came to
Rainbow Meadows as one of the "Lucky 19+4." The "Lucky 19+4"
included 19 horses, donkeys, miniature mules and miniature horses
(four of which were pregnant) that were seized on March 13, 2008
along with llamas, dogs, sheep, goats, cats, cattle, turkeys,
chickens and prairie dogs in one of Kansas's largest cases of animal
cruelty. Upon seizure, the horses and donkeys were placed at Rainbow
Meadows, where they received the necessary care to bring them back
to health. After being granted ownership of the equids, Rainbow
Meadows declared them as up for adoption. Sierra is saddle trained
and experienced on the trail, but will needed a confident rider. She
found that in her new adopter, and the two will make a wonderful
pair! |

Lil' Bit
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1986
Lil’ Bit was abandoned at
an auction in Wichita, Kansas - so thin that no one would even pay
the minimum bid of $5.00 for this poor Pony of America mare. At over
20 years of age, blind in one eye and nearly blind in the other, she
was covered in lice and filth when she arrived at Rainbow
Meadows. She weighed in at less than 450 pounds and in truly
pathetic condition. However, after a cleansing bath to kill the lice
and another to treat all the skin lesions caused by them, a badly
needed hoof trim, applications of various medications, and two good
meals, she was already doing better by the end of the day. Rainbow
Meadows worked daily to bring her back to good health, and she has
now found for her forever home, where she will be a wonderful
companion to another blind horse. |

Cinnamon
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 2003
Cinnamon is a grandmother's
dream: She is small, quiet, loves attention and is saddle trained
for even the most timid beginner. She can show a bit of "pony"
behavior but she is a doll. Cinnamon reportedly foundered in 2008 as
a result of morbid obesity. Her hoof care became too costly and the
maintenance was discontinued. As a result, she was in chronic pain
with hoof walls overgrown by 2-4 inches. Because they were not able
to meet her needs in hoof care, the owners decided to sign her over
to Rainbow Meadows, where she immediately began a weight reduction
program and intensive hoof care regimen. She showed significant
progress upon arrival, and her care was soon taken on by her new
adopter. |

B II Gyza (a.k.a. Pepper)
Rescued Arabian mare, Year of birth: 1988
Registering organization: Arabian Horse Association
Registration number: 421142
B II Gyza (GYR
x Zora), aka Pepper, is a registered Arabian mare who was recently
used in a backyard breeding operation in north-central Kansas. When
the inability to care for the horses reached a crisis level, mares
and stallions were still allowed to run together, despite the lack
of food and wellness care. As a result, Pepper was bred at the age
of 20. The stress of malnutrition was great, especially when
complicated by the presence of a developing foal. Fortunately, her
daughter Contessa was born healthy and strong in late September
2009. Pepper was in a re-feeding program allowed
to focus all of her attention on Contessa until she was weaned. She
has now gone on to a new job as the mount for her adoptive family.

Breeze
Rescued registered AQHA mare, Year of birth:
Approx. 1997
In October 2008,
Breeze Future Poco (a.k.a. Breeze), a registered Quarter horse mare of highly
desirable bloodlines, and her one-month-old filly, Misty Breeze
(a.k.a. Misty), were taken to a Nebraska sale barn. Breeze was
slated for sale to slaughter and the auction owner reported that if
Misty wasn’t purchased as well, she would be shot after the mare
left. Fortunately, a former killer buyer saw potential in the mare
and made a point of offering to bring her home in cooperation with
Shooting Star Equine Rescue and Stables, Inc. and the Fans of Barbaro/Alex Brown Racing forum if the appropriate funds could be
raised. The purchase price was paid and arrangements were made for
the pair to come to the safety of Rainbow Meadows. If it were not
for the generosity and open hearts of volunteers and donors, these
two beautiful horses would have met a very different fate. Happily, Breeze
has now found her forever home.

Joker
Recued gelding, Year of birth: 2005
This stunning
bay, Mustang/APHA cross, Joker is quite the comic. Relinquished by his
owners along with his dam, Trixie, Joker has had minimal
handling. Friendly and gregarious, Joker is ready to be taught
appropriate ground manners and then started under saddle. He will
bring great fun to his new forever home.
Sahar
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 2002
Sahar is a strikingly beautiful buckskin mare.
She is inquisitive and friendly. She is reported to be somewhat
reactive to new situations; however, she demonstrated no concerns as
she was introduced to her new home at Rainbow Meadows in February
2010. She is about 15-15.1 hands tall with no white. She has a tuft
of silver forelock hair which is very attractive against the other
black hair. She is sound and healthy and will make a great partner
to her new adopters. |

 |
Neumann
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Approx. 2003
A 15h Thoroughbred, Neumann
is a striking gentleman with the personality of a Golden Retriever.
He was purchased at a Kansas sale barn in the winter of 2007 where
he was at high risk of being sold to slaughter. Bought as a kid's
horse, Neumann was suffering from pneumonia and once back to health,
proved too energetic to serve as a horse for a young, inexperienced
rider. He is saddle trained, sound and an exquisite mover, and will
make a wonderful partner to his new adopter. |

Sarge
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Unknown
Sarge looks like an old crusader. A red Appy
with a graying face, he stands at about 13.3 - 14 hands. Upon
arrival in February 2010, he looked like a horse made by
committee: His legs were too short, his body too long, and his head
too much of a wedge. He was shaggy with poor muscle tone and body
condition. However, he has shown the staff at Rainbow Meadows that
he has a lot of heart as they work to ensure that he is in the best
shape possible. He will be a wonderful addition to his new forever
home. |

Sioux and Kiowa came to Rainbow
Meadows as one of "9 Lives." Seized in a rural Kansas
cruelty case in March of 2009, 8 horses (one pregnant) were
found neglected and at great risk. Severely emaciated, heavily
parasitized, lice infested, and virtually untouched, the "9 Lives" were
found in a 5-acre lot which resembled a public landfill. There were
carcasses of dead animals littering the property. There was no food
to eat and the only water available was from a contaminated pond. However, their futures
were bright
as they were rescued by Rainbow Meadows where they were
rehabilitated and taught to trust the humans in their life. |

Holly
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1994
Holly is a beautiful 14.1 hand mare. She was
purchased from an abusive environment in 2003, and has periodically
served as a pleasure mount since. However, life circumstances forced
her owner to surrender her when there was just no time to provide
the attention needed. She is a confident horse and will require an
experienced handler. It is reported by her previous owner that she
has done parades, was started on barrels and has worked cattle. She
will make a wonderful partner to her new adopter! |

"Grannie" Grace
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1993
The grand-dam to another
Rainbow Meadows rescue, Win, Grace also suffered much of the same
neglect at the hands of her owners. After securing Win's safety, the
same angels made another generous offer to save the life of "Grannie"
Grace, forever ensuring that she would no longer be trapped in the
environment that starved her daughter to death and nearly killed her
grand-colt, Win. She arrived at Rainbow Meadows in need of much hoof
and dental care, as well as deworming and vaccination protocol.
However, she had luckily not yet fallen into the depths of
emaciation and was ready to retake her role as "Grannie" to our
little Win. She stands at 15h+ tall and is reportedly saddle
trained. She has happily gone to her new forever home. |

Afortunado (a.k.a. Fortune)
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Approx. 2005
Fortune came to Rainbow
Meadows in a true twist of fate. After trying to rescue him from a
horse broker, the rescue learned that he had instead decided to
donate Fortune to a local vet school for euthanasia and dissection.
We were terribly disappointed and saddened to know that we could not
give him a second chance. But luck was on our side. Some time later,
at a visit to that same vet school to pick up a Rainbow Meadows
horse who had been there for treatment, the horse broker arrived at
the same time to drop off Fortune. Through negotiation with the vet
school and the broker, we succeeded in gaining Fortune's ownership
and securing his future. He is a kind, gentle soul and will make a
wonderful partner to his new adopter. |

Serendipity (a.k.a. Sere) - Registered name: Obviously Budas Kid
Rescued mare, Year of birth: 2006
Registering organization: American Quarter Horse Association
Registration number: 4922912
Started under saddle too
early, Sere was well trained but needed to be given time to mature
both emotionally and physically before she is asked to perform at
high levels. At less than three years of age, she was used in speed
events and other intense activities. She stands at 14.3 hands tall
and is very human friendly. Out of the prestigious Obvious
Conclusion AQHA blood lines, she will make an excellent riding
partner for her new adoptive owners.
Layla
Rescued mare,
Year of birth: Approx. 1999 This feisty Quarter/Arab
cross mare ran into bad luck when her owners had to move from a
rural community in Kansas to a metropolitan area. She was gifted to
a neighbor who did not feel prepared to handle the energy this mare
exhibits. Layla came to Rainbow Meadows when the "new owner"
selected two gentle older geldings for her personal enjoyment. The
previous owner reported that Layla was used for playday-type
activities by a teen. She will make a great addition to her new
home. |

Danger Bay (a.k.a. "D")
Rescued gelding, Date of birth: June 30, 1989
American Saddlebred Horse Association registration number: 92522
"Got a ladder?", is often
heard when approaching this 16h 3" tall Saddlebred gelding that arrived at Rainbow Meadows
in July 2009. Loss of job coupled with chronic and painful
illness came to burden the kind and sweet owner of Danger, whom we
now refer to as Big "D". This loving giant is an experienced
show ring competitor and behaves like a perfect
gentleman even though he has spent every previous day of his life in a
stall in a Saddlebred show barn. He is visually impaired in his left
eye, but has much life remaining as a regal riding partner to his
new adopter. |

Gaea
Rescued mare, Year of birth:
2008
Caught in the vicious cycle
of neglect, this striking mare, Gaea, and her beautiful buckskin
dam, Athena, suffered greatly. Severe emaciation, heavy parasite
infestation, unkempt hooves, and poor dental care all contributed to
their misery. Gaea was totally unhandled until arrival at Rainbow
Meadows and required regular training and routine interaction to
teach her that people are trustworthy. Now fully recovered and
started in light ground work, Gaea has found her forever home! |

Sunny
Rescued gelding, Date of birth: March 9, 1994
American Quarter Horse Association registration number: 3281709
Ranch bred, trained and
utilized, this stunning Champagne gelding ran into bad luck when he
developed a mild forehand lameness which did not resolve in
2007. Pasture rest was the only intervention and when that did not
work, he was deemed inappropriate for continued ranch work and
was slated for the sale barn, and probably on to the
killers. Fortunately, Sunny had an angel in his corner who decided
that there had to be a better option and contacted Rainbow
Meadows. This gentle guy is impressive at 15h 3". His saddle
training is impeccable and will be a great partner to his new
adopters. |

Lorenzo
Rescued gelding,
Year of birth: Approx. 2001
A perfect gentleman, this
stunning Paso Fino cross gelding is one of the nicest horses to come
to Rainbow Meadows. Little is known about his history, except that
he is reported to have been a trail horse out in Colorado, but was
receiving substandard care and was "rescued" from that environment
in 2008. However, the "rescuers" (a boarding stable in Wichita, KS)
were unable to sell him and decided that he would be euthanized as
they no longer felt they had room for him. Luckily, a Rainbow
Meadows friend and a boarder at that facility heard about the
impending plans to end the life of this beautiful boy and championed
for him to come to Rainbow Meadows. He is a level and dependable
horse, and has now found his forever home. |

Misty
Rescued mare, Year of birth:
2008
Happily,
Misty has now found her forever home.
Dest'y
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Approx. 1998
This tall, handsome Arabian gelding was on the short list for a trip
to the Mexican slaughterhouse in August of 2008. Fortunately, the
promise of a bright future was recognized in his kind eye and he was
given a chance at life when Rainbow Meadows was contacted by
Shooting Star Equine Rescue and Stables, Inc, near Topeka, Kansas,
telling us that he only had one day before his fate would be sealed.
The ransom was paid to the kill buyer and his future was ensured.
Dest'y is an elegant and graceful boy, always seeking human
companionship, and will make a wonderful partner to his new
adopters.

Kody's journey to Rainbow
Meadows was precipitated by a job loss and the birth of a new

a new family!

Kalli
Rescued mare, Year of birth: Approx. 1997
This stunning Tennessee Walking Horse cross mare
has had a run of bad luck. Rescued from the killer buyers in 2006 by
a horse rescue, she was then adopted by a western Kansas family who
were new to horses. When they realized they had taken on too many
horses, Kalli was returned to the rescue. She found a new home with
a loving family who was soon overwhelmed by the down-turn in the
economy. Expenses had to be cut, which included returning their
beloved mare. The rescue that saved Kalli was full, so Rainbow
Meadows stepped in to give this girl a chance. Finally, Kalli has
found herself a forever home.

Shag & Pepper
Rescued geldings, Year of birth: Approx. 1987
Shag and Pepper were purchased at a kill sale in
the early 1990's in Arkansas by a wonderful couple who were involved
informally in the rescue of dogs and cats. The geldings lived with
this couple in a life of luxury, until the downturn in the economy
caused foreclosure of their residence. A widespread effort was made
by various rescue agencies to find homes for all the dogs, cats and
horses, including a blind pony named Daisy. Rainbow Meadows agreed
to step in to care for Shag and Pepper and find forever homes for
these great guys. They are both aging gentlemen with lots of life
remaining to share with their new adopters.

Theo
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Approx. 2004
Theo was rescued just one
day before he was slated to be hauled to slaughter and had to
recover from malnourishment upon arrival at Rainbow Meadows. This
young Thoroughbred/paint cross is a sweet and gentle soul. Nearly
unflappable, he truly enjoys human companionship and attention. It
is suspected that Theo has a history of being run on the track and
he has some changes in his front legs which will limit him to nice
walks or slow jogs under saddle. He will make a wonderful horse
to his new adopters where he would be loved.

Trucker
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Approx. 1988
Trucker is a Saddlebred
gelding who stands over 15 hands tall. He arrived at Rainbow Meadows
totally emaciated. Though his owner had tried everything to address
his weight issues, he was in a boarding environment with more than
30 other horses in a very small, littered dry lot, and the stresses
of trying to fight for food was just too much. Trucker was a
reliable mount for his former owner, who had never owned a horse
before and made a wonderful riding partner for his new adoptive
owner. Trucker passed over Rainbow Bridge in the fall of 2009.

Silver
Rescued mare
Silver is a rescued Missouri Fox Trotter mare. She came to Rainbow
Meadows when her owner was transferred to Europe and was
unsuccessful in her attempts to rehome the mare. Because she knew
that sending Silver to an auction opened up the possibility of
slaughter or irresponsible owners, the individual contacted Rainbow
Meadows. Silver is calm and responsive. She is fully saddle-trained
and gaits wonderfully. Silver found her forever home in the fall of
2008. |

Noble
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: Approx. 2005
Noble is a cremello gelding that came to the
rescue in October of 2007. He had originally been rescued by another
Kansas
rescue organization in December 2006 as part of the same
weanling slaughter sale that brought Rainbow Meadows fillies Ko-Ko
and Keoni. Noble was adopted from that rescue, but as an ungelded
colt, he began acting “studdy” and his new adopter did not feel
comfortable handling him. So, Noble was returned to the Kansas
rescue. Under an agreement with that rescue, Rainbow Meadows accepted
Noble as he awaited his forever home. He was gelded prior to arriving
at Rainbow Meadows, and proved to be a calm and friendly horse
with a love for people.

Rescued mare, Year of birth: approx. 1984

steady and reliable mount to his adopters.

Rescued gelding, Year of birth: approx. 1982
A grey Arab gelding, Sterling was estimated at
being within a month of death from severe malnourishment when

anticipates mealtime, but does require a senior diet. Sterling is
well on his way to recovery. He has a history of having been a

live alone, so he was placed in a nursing home. Captain lived alone
for 2.5 years with no care. When the farm was scheduled for auction,
a neighbor contacted Rainbow Meadows, concerned that the gelding
would be sent to slaughter by the new owners. Contact was made with
the power of attorney for the owner and permission was received to
transfer Cap'n to Rainbow Meadows. His appreciation for human
attention was evident the moment he arrived as he allowed numerous
volunteers to work for hours to remove all the cockleburs tangled in
his mane and tail. Cap'n is a sweet soul that will make a wonderful
partner to his new family.

Jada

Willow |
Jada & Willow
Rescued
Tennessee Walker (TWH) mares
Years of birth
– Approx. 1992 and 1990
Jada and Willow were ransomed from
a kill buyer near Topeka, Kansas as part of probably the largest
slaughter rescue in Kansas (http://www.youtube.com/1ksjewel). Nearly
50 horses, some as young as 2 weeks of age, were part of a herd of
77 horses and 2 donkeys which were slated to be hauled to Mexico for
slaughter. Before the funds could be raised, the first load of 30
were hauled away. Soon however, more than $15,000 dollars was raised
from interested individuals across the United States to pay for the
horses, saving them from the terror of slaughter.
Both have now found their forever
homes where they are sure to be cared for until the end of their
days. |

Penrod (a.k.a. Buddy)
Rescued gelding, Year of birth: approx. 1975
When Buddy was almost 30 years old, his owner had mentioned to a
neighbor that he was looking for a slaughter auction for the "old
black gelding". Fortunately, this neighbor began a
vigilant search for help. Before long, a team of willing and
concerned volunteers had convinced the old rancher that there was a
better place for Buddy. A volunteer for Rainbow Meadows Rescue and
Retirement, Inc., pulled her trailer to northern Kansas on a cold
March day, then trucked all the way south to Sedan, delivering Buddy
to our facility. He arrived severely underweight, loaded with worms
and with a matted hair coat. Luckily, Rainbow Meadows staff
worked diligently to rehabilitate him to his healthier,
spunkier self and he has now found his forever home.
